Astrato skills for AI agents

3 min read · Updated 2 Nov 2026

Astrato skills are portable instruction folders for AI assistants. Each skill contains the workflow and safety rules for a type of task, and links back to this site for API details, schemas, and examples. The folders use the open SKILL.md format and work with any assistant that supports it.

Skill Install it for
astrato Understand Astrato, choose an app model, load documentation, and route the task.
astrato-apps Develop Data Apps with the CLI and @astrato-io/app-runtime, or in App Builder.
astrato-visualizations Integrate governed Astrato charts into externally hosted apps and Data Apps.
astrato-semantic-layer Author, validate, repair, import, version, export, and publish semantic layers.
astrato-dashboard Build or extend a complete dashboard, with or without a reference design.
astrato-data-discovery Inspect a layer’s contents, answer analytical questions, or investigate data for a dashboard.
astrato-dashboard-design Design or restyle dashboard presentation using existing context and current design guides.
astrato-app-sparklines Add sparklines to KPI cards and table columns so readers see direction as well as value.
astrato-app-motion Add low-cost ambient motion and shaders that respect performance and reduced-motion settings.
astrato-app-brand Style an app with a named company’s logo, colours and typefaces taken from its website.

Install astrato as the entry point, plus the task skills relevant to your work:

  • Chart integration uses astrato-visualizations; add astrato-apps for a Data App.

  • Complete dashboards use astrato-dashboard, with astrato-data-discovery for data investigation, astrato-dashboard-design for presentation and astrato-visualizations for implementation. Add astrato-apps when the dashboard is a Data App.

  • Styling an existing dashboard uses astrato-dashboard-design and astrato-visualizations.

  • Standalone inspection and analysis use astrato-data-discovery; model management uses astrato-semantic-layer. Without the discovery skill, use Semantic layer workflows for metadata inventory and inspection, and Business questions guide for analytical questions and governed queries.

  • Dashboards that need trend context, ambient motion or a company’s look add astrato-app-sparklines, astrato-app-motion and astrato-app-brand respectively, alongside astrato-dashboard-design.

Installing all ten is useful when one assistant handles all these tasks. Each skill includes its own documentation entry point, and task skills explain how to proceed through the current docs when a companion is unavailable. Installing a companion does not require loading it for every task.

For a browser app, the router follows Getting started with Data Apps to establish which app model applies before scaffolding, authentication or package selection. Explicit intent and existing project markers win. If a new app is ambiguous, it asks whether it should be a Data App or an app hosted outside Astrato.

  • Data App work uses astrato-apps; add astrato-visualizations when it renders charts.
  • Externally hosted or third-party app chart integration uses astrato-visualizations without the CLI or Data App runtime.
  • Semantic-layer-only and MCP-only work does not ask an irrelevant hosting question.

The Data Apps skill owns the app authentication checkpoint. Follow the authentication checkpoint for AI agents for sign-in instructions and credential handling.

  1. Download the current skill folders from github.com/astrato-io/astrato-skills.
  2. Copy each complete folder into the skills location supported by your assistant. Do not copy only the Markdown text into a prompt.
  3. Restart or reload the assistant so it discovers the new skills.
  4. Ask the assistant to complete an Astrato task. Each skill’s description tells the assistant when to load it.

Assistants use different installation locations and commands. Follow your assistant’s own skill installation documentation; the Astrato folders themselves do not depend on one vendor.

Skills contain the durable workflow and safety boundaries for their task. Detailed preparation, verification, design choices and theme values live in the current guides, so an installed skill can continue using them without a package update. This site contains the API details, schemas, examples, and limitations that are more likely to change. Each skill starts at /llms.txt, reuses references already read in the task and fetches only missing guides. See documentation reading guidance. If a skill disagrees with the documentation, follow the documentation.

Skills do not grant access to Astrato. The assistant still needs the authentication and scopes described in Authentication and MCP setup. Never place a Personal Access Token inside a skill folder.
