Choose an expert approach
Expert guides provide a design lens for decisions about chart form, emphasis and density. Consult one when it helps resolve a presentation choice; you do not need to read every guide or select an expert for every app. These pages adapt the named approaches to Astrato’s documented capabilities; they are not a consultation with the person.
Pick the approach that fits the task
Section titled “Pick the approach that fits the task”The sidebar starts with broad dashboard and design-process guidance, then moves to more focused analytical approaches. The order is a suggested reading priority, not a ranking of the experts.
| Approach | Pick it when |
|---|---|
| Stephen Few | Operational monitoring needs a clear overview and visible exceptions. |
| Andy Kirk | The audience or format is open-ended and you need a process for design choices. |
| Alberto Cairo | A page explains findings, with attention to context and misleading interpretations. |
| William S. Cleveland | Accurate comparisons and perceptual clarity are the central concern. |
| Edward Tufte | Dense analysis benefits from small multiples and restrained non-data decoration. |
Apply the approach to your choices
Section titled “Apply the approach to your choices”Use the selected guide alongside Choose a chart and the layout and style choosers. Keep the user’s requirements and verified data meaning authoritative. If a guide’s preference conflicts with a required interaction or the audience’s needs, explain the choice rather than combining incompatible rules blindly.
Record the chosen approach, if any, in the page brief.
