Rebuilding a Workbook

2 min read · Updated 27 Oct 2026

This page belongs to Data App developer guide. It applies to any code-built app, hosted by Astrato or by you.

Before handing over the rebuild, verify every source setting is reproduced or listed as an intentional omission. Check grouped versus stacked bars, Top N, palettes, column widths, totals and wrapped headings.

Inspect each object’s settings in the Workbook editor before rebuilding it. Screenshots may omit settings such as Top N limits or per-measure colours. No documented API returns a Workbook object’s complete settings, so collect them from the editor.

Use the definition schema for supported settings and operations for the remaining options. A definition that compiles can still use defaults where source settings were omitted; verify the rendered result.

  1. Write down every source object’s settings before building anything.
  2. List each object’s non-default settings. That list is the acceptance criteria for the object.
  3. Build the definition, then apply operations for the remaining settings. Look each one up on the type’s operations page and mark each setting as reproduced or intentionally omitted.
  4. Check the final object against the list. Later operations can overwrite earlier ones — a rule applied to all columns replaces a width set on one column before it.

Use this as a starting inventory; the object’s own settings are the authority.

Object Settings that are commonly lost
Bar and line Grouped or stacked layout, orientation, Top N and “others”, sort order, area fill, line curve, data labels, legend visibility and position, per-measure colours, axis titles, date-part grouping
Pie Colouring per slice, slice order, legend, label placement, corner radius
Table Column labels and order, column widths, wrapped headings, totals and their position, number formats, indicator and progress representations with their scales and colours, row height
Sankey Node colours, label display
Filter Its field, single or multiple selection, the control’s fixed height
Figure (number) Number format, comparison measure, delta direction
  • Correct confirmed source defects in the rebuilt app, such as alphabetical month ordering, and document each correction in the README. Leave the source Workbook unchanged. For model defects, follow Report model defects.
  • Where measure parameters were bound to Workbook variables, pass the values as query parameters.
  • Do not mount hidden objects; see Hidden means unmounted.
  • Maps, self-service objects, filter bars, buttons, bookmarks and chart actions have no standalone equivalent (see Visualizations limitations). Build what the dashboard needs in the page where possible.

List omitted settings, unsupported objects and missing interactions with their reasons in the app’s README and the handoff message.
